Quantitative Analysis of Non-obvious Performer Gestures
نویسنده
چکیده
This article presents quantitative results from movement analysis of several clarinet performers with respect to non-obvious or ancillary gestures produced while playing a piece. The comparison of various performances of a piece by the same clarinetist shows a striking consistency of movement patterns, as well as performances of the same piece with different expressive characteristics. Different clarinetists show different overall patterns, although clear similarities may be found, suggesting the existence of various levels of information in the resulting movement. The relationship of these non-obvious movements to material/physiological, structural and interpretative parameters will be highlighted.

New Directions for Sonification of Expressive Movement in Music
Expert musical performance is rich with movements that facilitate performance accuracy and expressive communication. As in sports or rehabilitation, these movements can be sonified for analysis or to provide realtime feedback to the performer. Expressive movement is different however in that movements are not strictly goaloriented and highly idiosyncratic. Drawing upon insights from the literat...
متن کاملGesture based synthesis of bowed string instruments
Synthesis of traditional music instruments has been an active research area and there exist successful implementations of instruments with low degree of control like non-sustained excitation instruments. But for instruments with sustained excitation, such as bowed strings or wind instruments, where the interaction between instrument and performer is continuous, the quality of existing models is...
متن کاملNon-conscious Gesture Control of Sound Spatialization
This paper presents ongoing work into the design of interfaces for live musical performance using gesture controlled sound spatialization. In particular, we discuss the use of performer’s gestures to allow them to manipulate spatialization parameters without their conscious control. A number of motion capture sessions involving a cello performer are described through which we determined a set o...
متن کاملGest-O: Performer gestures used to expand the sounds of the saxophone
This paper describes the conceptualization and development of an open source tool for controlling the sound of a saxophone via the gestures of its performer. The motivation behind this work is the need for easy access tools to explore, compose and perform electroacoustic music in Colombian music schools and conservatories. This work led to the adaptation of common hardware to be used as a senso...
متن کاملA Component Model of Gestural Primitive Throughput
This paper suggests that there is a need for formalizing a component model of gestural primitive throughput in music instrument design. The purpose of this model is to construct a coherent and meaningful interaction between performer and instrument. Such a model has been implicit in previous research for interactive performance systems. The model presented here distinguishes gestural primitives...
